When it rains, it pours, and in this case, poor Baby #6 got caught in the middle of a baby carrier storm!  Ring Slings, Wraps, meh dais, and Soft Structured Carriers, my baby carrier stash is full of choices and makes my daily decision of “which carrier to wear” an hard one indeed!  I was recently asked, “how do you decide which carrier to use when?!?!”  Here’s how I figure things:

What on earth is “poppability?”  It’s a babywearing term that means ease of use of baby carrier is regards to speed when putting baby in or taking baby out!  POPPABILITY!  And that is where it’s at for this mommy of 6 babies under 9!  I need to be fast – lightening fast – so that I can chase my nekkid toddler down the street, run to the rescue of my 4 year old, get baby slung in a jiffy to help my 6 year olds with an art project, or put lil guy on my back quickly so that I can do Legos with my 8 year old!  No time to waste here!

At this stage of the game – PAXbaby Baby #6 is 24 days old – the easiest way to wear baby is in a Ring Sling!  I can be holding my little one while putting the sling on, and it’s easy to adjust on the run! Popping baby into a Stretchy Wrap is fast, however I need 2 hands to put on the wrap first, and then I can get him into the wrap!  As for meh dais, I love their custom fit and comfy straps, but until you are a pro, this is not the “poppable” carrier you are looking for!  In the Soft Structured Carrier world, there is 1 SSC that I would call truly “poppable,” and that is the Beco Butterfly II! Once I have the carrier fitted for my needs (back carry versus front), I can thrown it on while holding my babe, and then get him settled in the carrier while on the run!  I can’t tell you how many times I have been buckling my kids into the Butterfly while already to the rescue!  Today, it’s my Sakura Bloom Ring Sling, but as #6 gets heavier, my go-to carrier for babywearing on the go will be the Beco Butterfly II!

As soon as I found out that I was pregnant, I have been looking forward – OK, that’s an understatement – DYING for the day that PAXbaby #6 arrived so I could babywear a new squishy baby!  There is truly NOTHING like that feeling of your brand new baby cuddled against your chest, sweet breath on your neck, and perfect head cupped under your chin!  Besides which, the ability to do pretty much anything hands-free provides NO excuse for NOT having a new baby, right?  I may be a bit baby crazy, but to me, giving my older children a new sibling is the BEST gift ever and the best excuse for me to hoard away a slew of new carriers bringing me (this close) to “stash nirvana!”

Anyway, enough chat, down to specifics!  PAXbaby #6, Declan, was born Sunday morning at almost sunrise, after 12 days of prodromal labor and an awesome 12 minutes of pushing!  We had planned a water birth at home, and successfully pulled it off, making Declan the 5th Davidsson baby born at home, and 3rd water baby!  His siblings woke up an hour later to the sound of “new baby meowing sounds” and were ecstatic to finally get to meet their new little bubby!  At 9 pounds 10 ounces, Declan is my biggest baby by far, and has this whole nursing thing DOWN!  Today was his first babywearing experience (at 36 hours old!) so I could video tape his oldest brother’s birthday cake and singing (Eli turned 8 today and said that his baby brother was his BEST present!) and I chose a Sakura Bloom LINEN RING SLING in Blackberry to wear!  Declan was swaddled in a light muslin blanket aready so I popped the entire baby burrito upright into the sling with his head nice and high – close enough to kiss – and the tail wrapped around the rings just in case he slipped a bit in the sling.

When my mail carrier arrived with a box of new carriers, I didn’t have any other models available, so I grabbed the only kid I could find to wear in my fluffy mail – PAXbaby’s newest SSC hybrid, the Olives & Applesauce 1/2 buckle!  Not only was my almost 8 year old weightless on my back, the waistband fit comfortably under my 38 week baby belly!  After we took pictures, I went to untie the shoulder straps, and Baby #1 asked if I could wear him longer!  Awwwwwwww!

Counting down to PAXbaby #6’s due date, I have been nesting like crazy, and getting all of My Favorite Things ready for his arrival!  I’m very excited that my new Luna Beco Gemini (now available for immediate – and free! – shipping!) has arrived in time as well as my GORGEOUS Sakura Bloom ring sling in Blackberry!!!  I haven’t chosen which carrier will be his FIRST babywearing experience, but I’m guessing it will be something stretchy and organic!!!!  My other Favorite Things pictured here are an owl-y muslin blanket (thank you, Jessica!!!!), my can’t – live – without – it Mustela cleansing fluid, little guy’s FIRST cloth diaper (thank you, Laura!!!), and my “vintage” Pottery Barn diaper changing station that holds years of baby memories and a stash of cloth diapers that will make you drool!  Wait til you see his (my?  hahaha!) baby carrier closet – I think we are just about ready!  Thanks for waiting for #6’s debut with me!  It’s fun knowing we are all so excited to “meet him!!!!”

If you are approached by “well meaning” strangers telling you that your baby carrier is a death trap, here a few key points to remember!

A bag sling bends your baby in an unnatural C shape, constricting their airway and making it hard to breathe.  YOUR sling or baby carrier can be worn safely in an upright position, called tummy to tummy!  Your baby can breathe in a normal, natural way, and you can easily see and hear that they are alright.  Bag slings have the babies low on the mother’s body out of sight and in harm’s way if the mother were to turn or be bumped from the side.

Safe Sling suggestions for newborn babies:

Moby Wrap – This is a stretchy wrap that conforms to your body and holds baby to you in comfort for both of you!

Sakura Bloom ring sling – Wearing your baby upright in a Sakura Bloom is comfortable and fashionable!

Freehand meh dai – With its padded straps and headrest, this mei tei would be an excellent choice for a heavier newborn!

Olives & Applesauce – This soft structured carrier also caters to newborns with its insert and straps that can cross against your back in an X!

Moby Wrap – extremely comfortable stretchy wrap ideal for newborns through 15-18 pounds. Once your baby grows that heavy, the stretchy fabric is too stretchy and you will need to upgrade to a carrier designed for heavier babies.

Babyhawk meh dai – Asian inspired carrier with a body and 4 straps. Can be intimidating to start, but can be the most comfortable carrier in the bunch!

BB Slen – A woven wrap made under fair trade conditions that is “grippy” enough to be easy to use even for beginner wrappers!

Beco Butterfly II – My personal favorite Soft Structured Carrier, meaning that the straps buckle instead of wrap or tie. Great for moms, dads, toddlers, or newborns. The infant insert is included but removable and the integrated seat means that even new moms and inexperienced babywearers can get their baby on their back like a backpack easily and comfortably!

Other favorite brands are Gypsymama wraps, Oh Snap! SSCs, and Olives & Applesauce SSC!

Step out of your comfort zone, say NO to commercially manufactured brands like Bjorn and Evenflo, and get yourself a REAL baby carrier! You and baby deserve it!
