Our newest adventure in #readaloudrevival is Roald Dahl’s The BFG in which the Giants drink an amazing beverage called Frobscottle.  I challenged each of the kids to design their own magical elixir! The results were varied, but everyone stated that their concoction was “rare!” Some were tasty, some not, and three of them had the magical ability to fill you up for the whole day; wouldn’t that come in handy! My focus with the older kids this year is GRAMMAR, so they each wrote a paragraph about their imaginary beverage. This challenged a couple of them to think outside their usual “box,” and drew out the sillies from the others who love to get creative in their writing! I love watching their vocabulary improving daily as well as their use of interesting sentence structure!

Well, it is that time of year again! With the start of September comes…BACK TO SCHOOL!!!!
This year, all three PAXmoms are homeschooling!
For those of you that are homeschool vets, we would LOVE to see how YOUR school runs! Where do your kids do their learning?
Which curriculum do you follow? Do you un-school? Co-op? How do you wrangle and entertain your babies and toddlers while your older ones are schooling?
Email us at help@PAXbaby.com, and share your pics and ideas with us!

Those of you who are just getting started, we thought that we would share more of our own PAXmom-homeschool stories, and photos with you this year! We will let you all know what WE are up to throughout the year, you know, besides bringing you all amazing babywearing rainbows and such. 😉

We hope you all have an awesome back-to-school!!!

This September PAXbaby is pleased to host the lovely Joanna McNeilly from the Center for Babywearing Studies; join us here! Once again, Joanna will be teaching the Foundations course. You can read all of the nitty gritty details directly on the CBWS website, but here is an excerpt:

During the course you will:

  • Learn how to teach others to wear baby carriers:   Pouches and ring slings, woven and stretchy wraps, meh dais and SSCs (soft structured carriers), plus a few knots.
  • Examine the physiological and the psychological aspects of infant carrying.
  • Identify how to assist someone in discovering what makes a good carry/carrier for themselves.
  • Discover and recognize the importance of a systematic approach.
  • Understand our core principles which will guide you as you meet each new parent.
  • Design your own concept for an individual consultation.
  • Explore sensitive listening and it’s importance in successful consultations.
  • Delve into incident data reports from the CPSC (reports of injury in baby carriers/while babywearing) to better understand what concerns exist with regard to babywearing.
  • Plus much more!

Our Foundations Course is ideal for anyone working with new parents, parents to be or infant caregivers including:

  • Babywearing Consultants

?#?PAXretreat2016? is hosting Joanna from Center for Babywearing Studies for a Foundations course here in sunny Southern California. September 15-19 2016 will be an amazing weekend full of babywearing, rainbows and new ideas cumulating in our Birthday Blessingway!!

How long is the training class? Our Foundations course provides 30 hours of training time over four days. The exact schedule will vary based on the individual needs of each class. Can I bring a child to class? Our Foundations course is 30 hours of intensive professional training. Feedback from past graduates has been that by the later days of class, children become overwhelmed and frustrated. While we do allow infants 6 months and under to attend with their caregiver, you must be able to perform each carry with a demonstration doll and your skills assessment must be performed with a demonstration doll. We encourage you to consider childcare, if possible, so that you and your fellow attendees can focus completely on the coursework. We are happy to allow a caregiver to bring your baby to nurse or have a bottle, and we will also have prescheduled breaks and lunch for time with your little one. Our goal is to make sure that you and your classmates get the absolute most from your time with us. What are the materials that are included in the cost? Included in the cost of each class are several items:
  1. A knot-learning shawl. This is not a baby carrier but instead a great tool for learning and teaching how to tie knots. You will likely use this frequently over the years.
  2. Your manual. This is a great reference tool and will hopefully be something you refer to as needed. Our bibliography has over 75 unique references, the majority of which are from the last 5 years, and can be a great asset to you if you want to research something directly.
  3. Professional quality teaching aids. This is new as of July 2013. Based on feedback from our graduates we are now including a set of teaching aids that you will be able to take home with you. This will save you the time of creating the visual aids yourself and the hassle of getting them professionally laminated. We want each of our consultants to be able to begin consulting straight away and believe this will eliminate one of the largest hurdles.
Do you ‘certify’ your consultants? As we wait for an industry-wide accepted certification, yes we do ‘certify’ those graduates of our program who complete the additional steps required. We have an outlined set of parameters that must be met in order to qualify for the ‘certification.’ After these conditions are met then the trainee is considered ‘Certified.’ What does your ‘certification’ entail? We feel there are a few components that are necessary to consider a consultant competent to be ‘certified.’ There are 6 steps that must be successfully completed.
  1. Completing all Pre-class homework.
  2. The “Consultation Concept” must be developed and finished by review time during the last day of class.
  3. You must show mastery of teaching technique for 15 carrying positions, plus knots during the “group skills assessment.”
  4. Successful completion of the final quiz at end of class.
  5. Obtaining liability Insurance coverage as described in your Handbook.
  6. Obtaining a valid AHA CPR card
Do you offer continuing education? Yes. We offer a range of ongoing education opportunities that we consider to be beneficial to developing and expanding your baby wearing consulting practice. We will add additional continuing education opportunities as we partner with the people and companies who we find have valuable resources that can assist our consultants. As always, as we develop these classes our graduates will have the opportunity to be involved in the “beta testing” for free or low cost. Plus they will have a voice in how the classes develop. Do you promote mentor-ship within your organization? Yes we do! We believe mentor-ship to be a hallmark tenet of laying the foundation for a new career or industry, such as babywearing consulting. Those who are paving the way in babywearing consulting have valuable experience and information. We are hopeful that they will share openly and honestly with those who are just entering the field. To that end we encourage mentor-ship and guidance within our organization and will help facilitate that as needed. Why do you teach a proper cradle carry? Yes our consultants will know how to do, and teach, a proper cradle carry. Experience has taught us that here in the USA there is a section of our population who believes that this is the best way to carry a baby. We tried to teach them to carry their babies differently and lost many of them in the process. Knowing how to do a proper cradle carry means that when confronted with the parent/grandparent/caregiver who insists that is the way they want to carry their child you will be able to assist them, talk about best practice and hopefully gain their trust in the meantime. We have also seen that, while rare, there are times when a tummy-to-tummy position is impossible for whatever reason. We want our consultants to be the best prepared for whatever they encounter and feel that this knowledge and experience helps them to be very well-rounded in their practice. Read more here : PAXbaby

#PAXpoppins Carry

Find middle marker

Place at center of your torso

Gather wrap

Pull ends to your back

Switch hands

Pull ends up and over your shoulders to your chest

Let ends drop in front of you

Gather wrap on each shoulder making sure that wrap is smooth across your back

Hold baby on your body where you want baby to be when you are finished wrapping

Pull top rail of the wrap over baby to their nape

Smooth wrap down over baby’s body

Tuck remainder of wrap under baby’s bottom creating a seat (knee to knee with baby’s knees higher than their bottom like an M)

Pull ends to tighten

Smooth wrap over each shoulder and leave gathered on your neck

Pull one end taut and either place between your knees or stand on the end

Pull the other end taut and pop your arm out and over the end so the wrap is now under your arm around your ribs

Pull snugly scross your torso and baby’s body

Pull the end under the taut vertical rail

Tuck this new layer under baby’s bottom as a second seat

Double back the end so that the “wrong side of the wrap is showing”

Tuck this new layer under baby’s bottom as a third seat

Bring end over baby’s body and leg (or under if you prefer) and to your back

Bring the taut vertical end leg (or under if you prefer) and to your back

Knot off behind your back with a double knot

Or if you have plenty of tail left, cross and bring back to your front to tie off under baby’s bum

Smooth the layers over baby’s body

Using your thumb pull the bottom rail of the wrap over your shoulder down and back up to cap your shoulder (or gather neatly if you prefer)

Check in a mirror that baby’s posture is a beautiful M and that baby’s airways are clear

ENJOY the comfort of the #PAXpoppins carry, a rebozo torso carrier with one shoulder and a Poppins finish!

1. First thing is first. Tell us your name, and how long you have been a PAXmommy for?

Hi, I’m Alena and Ive been a PAXmommy for just over 2 years

paxbaby

2. How many babies do you have?
I have 6 babies, ranging in age from 13 years old to 11 months

paxbaby

3. Have you worn them all?
Yes, I have actually. I wore my first 2 in a horribly uncomfortable snugli. I didn’t even remember until I saw a pic of myself. I really got into babywearing when #3 came along and we were officially outnumbered. I had to figure out a way to juggle all 3.
paxbaby

4. Who introduced you to babywearing?
I was bump buddies with a mom on babycenter. She sold me my first sling and added me to the babywearing community.
paxbaby
5. You have had two preemies, right? Can you explain to us how wearing a preemie can be different than wearing a full term baby?
Many people assume that preemies are just smaller newborns. There is a lot more to a preemie than that. They are amazing little babies that still have developing to do outside the womb. In the first weeks of life, up to their due dates they need an environment as close to the womb as possible. In the NICU, their incubator provides this environment, but once you are home, imho, a wrap or ring sling is the next closest thing. They are secure against their mother’s skin, listening to her heart beat, wrapped up tightly. I will always treasure those early wearing days. Even though I mourn losing the end of my pregnancy, I am so happy we had another way to create that bond.
paxbaby
6. Do you have any babywearing tips for preemie moms?
In my experience they have been extremely floppy and take longer than a full term baby to develop their core strength. This makes wearing in the first few months different than what I would recommend for full term babies. I personally do not recommend stretchy carriers. My son was 5lbs 2oz when I started wearing him and the stretchy wrap just did not support his back and spine in an optimal position.  A regular stretchy wrap would more suit a baby 8lbs or more, as the manufacturers recommend, but I did not test it out myself when he finally reached that weight 8 weeks later.
My absolute favorite carrier for a preemie is a wrap conversion ring sling. Easy to adjust and get baby in a good position without being overwhelming. 2nd favorite is a very thin woven wrap. Its best to save the meh dai’s and ssc for an older preemie once they can support their neck and core well. If you have any questions or need help wearing your preemie, please email in at help@PAXbaby.com and we would love to help.

7. One last question, what has surprised you most about babywearing this past year?
Everyone who knows me knows that I am a huge fan of woven wraps, they really are my go-to carrier for every situation. So when I got my first Tula, I expected it to become my husband’s carrier. Well to my surprise, I reach for the Tula every single day! It’s nothing like the other ssc (soft structured carriers) I’ve tried and I absolutely love it. If you would have told me 6 months ago that I’d reach for my Tula more than my Uppy, I would have laughed. Now I have to admit that I do! This wrapper has finally found the ssc love. <3

Woven Wraps 101: What do all those sizes mean?!

When you are brand new to babywearing and the world of woven wraps, there is just SOOOO much to learn! Weft… size… blend…wait, what the heck is a weft anyway? What’s the difference between a linen/bamboo blend and a hemp/cotton one? We will get to all of those, I promise, but really, the most important to learn, and yet, most confusing of all, is sizing!!  What size do you start with? How do you know which will be best??

The sizing below is based off of a base size of 6!
We will cover base sizes in more detail at the end of this post, so sit tight! For now, know that if you wear larger than a size 12 clothing, or if you are particularly busty, you may need to go up a wrap size for most carries. If you wear a size 4 or smaller in clothing, you’ll likely prefer a size down in your wrap, or you may find yourself with overwhelmingly long tails! (Tails are the left over portion that hangs down when you have finished tying off a carry).

** Here’s our little safety spiel **:

As you experiment please take utmost precaution with your baby!  Practice over a bed, have a spotter, and please do not attempt to back carry until you’ve mastered wrapping on your front AND  baby can sit unassisted! Practice really does make perfect, and some of these carries do take awhile to master. If you do not feel comfortable attempting a new carry with your baby, we recommend trying with a weighted doll, or a stuffed animal until you get the movements down.

And now, on to the fun part!

Size 1: super shorty or rebozo length – 2.2m – this length is rarely produced, and as the name suggests, is REALLY short! A rebozo carry is really the only thing most people will be able to do with this length wrap. Most manufacturers do not offer a size 1.

Size 2: shorty – 2.6-2.8m – For an average sized wearer, this is where the fun starts! There are lots of carries that can be accomplished with a shorty!

  • Rebozo
  • RUB (Rucksack Carry Tied Under Bum)
  • Ruck TAS (Tied At Shoulder)
  • RRRR (Reinforced Rear Rebozo Ruck)
  • Double Rebozo
  • Half  JBC (Jordan’s Back Carry)
  • SBCC (Short Back Cross Carry)
  • SHC (Simple Hip Carry)
  • TC (Torso Carry)

Rebozo carry in a 3.2m Natibaby Classic Zebra in 30% hemp and 70% cotton

Size 3: long shorty – 3.1-3.2m – There’s a lot of versatility with a size 3, and this is the shortest length where most wearers can begin to pull off a two shoulder front carry. In addition to the size 2 carries, you will also be able to do:

  • Kangaroo
  • Semi FWCC (Front Wrap Cross Carry)
  • DHR (Double Hammock Rebozo)
  • HCC (Hip Cross Carry)
  • Poppin’s Hip Carry
  • SCC (Short Cross Carry)
  • Hip Kangaroo Carry
Size 4: mid length 3.6-3.7m – mid length wraps are great for back and hip carries! In addition to these, you’ll be able to do the carries listed under size 3 and some of the size 2 carries.
  • JBC (Jordan’s Back Carry)
  • DH TAS (Double Hammock Tied At Shoulder)
  • DH TUB (Double Hammock Tied Under Bum)
  • Ruck TIF (Rucksack Carry tied in front)
  • Reinforced Ruck
  • Robin’s Hip Carry
  • CHCC (Coolest Hip Cross Carry)
  • Half FWCC
  • BCC (Back Cross Carry)
5, 6, 7, and 8 are full length wraps, and many people will only use one of these sizes, called their “base size”. Which base size you use depends mostly on your clothing size. Most women who wear smaller than a size 6 clothing will use a size 5 (4.1-4.2m) as their base. The majority of wearers between a size 6 and size 12 clothing will use a size 6 (4.6-4.9m) wrap as their base, and most women who wear a size 14 or larger, and the majority of men, will use a size 7 (5.1-5.3m) as their base size. Large or very tall men, and women who wear a size 26 or larger clothing may find they prefer a size 8 (5.6-5.7m) wrap.
If you are especially busty, you may find that you need to go up a size, but as you become a more proficient wrapper, tighter passes and less slack will mean that you won’t need quite as much length.
Here’s where it gets a little tricky! Some wearers may find they like to size up or down for a particular carry, depending on their body type or the length of tail they prefer, but most wearers will be able to do these carries with their base size, and some of the size 4 carries, as well! (What size you prefer for these will come with practice, I promise!!)
  • Reinforced Ruck TT (Reinforced Rucksack Tied Tibetan)
  • SHBC (Secure High Back Carry)
  • BWCC (Back Wrap Cross Carry)
  • FCC (Front Cross Carry)
  • FWCC (Front Wrap Cross Carry)
  • PWCC (Pocket Wrap Cross Carry)
  • Christina’s Ruckless Back Carry
  • DH (Double Hammock)
  • Wiggleproof
  • DRS2S (Double Rebozo Shoulder To Shoulder)
  • Taiwanese

Taiwanese Variation in a 4.2m Natibaby Zebra *grape* in 30% linen and 70% cotton

There is just SO much versatility with babywearing in a woven wrap, it can seem overwhelming at first… almost like learning a new language. So many terms, so many abbreviations, so many videos and tutorials. Not every carry will be your favorite, but there are sure to be at least a few that you fall in LOVE with. The carries we’ve listed are really just scratching the surface, there are many, many more!! By changing the way you tie off a carry, you can use a longer or shorter wrap, make a carry more supportive or even stop your toddler from popping their seat! Perhaps, now you can see why some people may have a veritable collection of woven wraps! There are SO many different patterns, blends, styles, and SIZES, who could choose just one?!
The key to becoming an awesome wrapper is to learn the basics, and get them down pat before moving on to anything more advanced. Ask your babywearing group leaders for assistance, participate in babywearing challenges, watch videos from reputable sources, and always, always, always put safety first. Remember that if you are stuck or confused, you can always email us photos at help@PAXbaby.com – we are happy to help you troubleshoot!!
