Thanks PAXfriend Megan S. for this awesome illustration of why you should wash and dry a woven wrap BEFORE use! WOW! Look at that “bloom”!! Make sure to read the washing instructions for your woven wraps, some LOVE heat, some need to be hung to dry, and others can be dried on low-heat! Tossing in a few dryer balls can also help to break in a new wrap! What does your routine look like?

Woven wraps often come to us in “loom state” and are in need of a little TLC before their true beauty can be released!!

Do you take before and after shots of your wraps??
We would love to see your photos!!

Giving Diapers, Giving Hope was founded by Kristen McCarthy.

She went through a very hard time financially, with literally no money coming in to support her children.  Through her struggles, she realized how much she was thankful for her cloth diaper stash, during these hard times. As she was washing her diapers one day, she thought to herself,

“Thank goodness I cloth diaper because if I didn’t I wouldn’t even know how I could buy my children diapers!”

She began realizing that there were no federally funded programs for cloth diapers, and if she didn’t have cloth, she would have no means to diaper her children.

What did other low-income families do if they didn’t cloth diaper!??!

How would did they get by??

These thoughts led Kristen to start a non-profit organization with her good friend Emily, called Giving Diapers, Giving Hope “which lends cloth diapers to low income families to help lessen the burden of diapering their babies and hopefully put the money they save towards bills, food and clothing.”

“We founded GDGH in April 2011 and we are excited about all of the families we have been able to help, just through donations alone. We have gotten a good amount of donations, but we obviously are still needing more so we can help as many families as possible. Along with providing diapers to needy families, we are also providing cloth diapering education and support for the duration of the family borrowing the diapers. Our hope is that it is as positive experience as possible for each family. We are also going to try to provide them with as many cloth diapering accessories as possible, such as wetbags, snappi’s, cloth diaper detergent, etc.

This is a really exciting project for me because it obviously hits very close to home. I am aware that some of the people we are helping might be in a better financial situation than I am, but there are many ways we can be struggling. Even though I am still struggling financially, having the Giving Diapers, Giving Hope Foundation has given me so much hope, regardless of my financial situation and I hope that by helping out other struggling families and by alleviating some of their financial stress, this will provide them with hope as well.”

Congratulations!!! You *just* purchased your very first wrap!!

Now what??

Well… that is up to you. You could wear it first, or you could wash it, and start breaking it in.

Wash it?
But, HOW?!

**Disclaimer: We advise you to always follow the manufacturer’s directions for the care of any wrap, but this is how the PAXmommies wash their own personal wovens. **

First, check out the fiber content.

100% Cotton: cold wash, hang dry – or dry on low heat. Can be ironed on the ‘cotton’ setting.

Linen: Wash on cold, hang dry or dry on low/no heat. Responds well to steam iron, and softens with wet heat.

Bamboo:  Wash on cold, hang dry or lay flat.

Hemp: Wash on warm, dry on low/no heat, or take out of the dryer partially dry and steam iron.  (Softens faster with heat, but some shrinkage will occur).

Wool: Hand wash in bathtub, or sink with woolwash, in tepid water. Do not squeeze,  lay flat on dry towels and roll to get excess water out. Lay flat to dry.

Silk: Hand wash/machine wash gentle-delicate cycle, lay flat to dry. Avoid tumble-dry, avoid drying in direct sunlight (fading).

Ring Slings: You can wrap the metal rings, or throw the entire thing into a pillow case.

A few extra tips:

With all woven wraps you want to make sure that you  skip the fabric softeners which can lead to build up over time.

Most wraps are cut on the long side to allow for *some* shrinkage.

If you are worried about washing, drying and the like, it is probably best to stay with easy-to-to-care-for fibers.

The first time I wash a wrap, I tend to wash it on its own, or with a load of old towels JUST in case it the color bleeds.

All subsequent washes,  get treated as normal, and simply go in with the rest of my laundry, or all together in one happy rainbowy wash.

** You can always throw wool dryer balls into the dryer to help break in a wrap. The more the merrier!!**

Other ways that you can break in a wrap:

– wearing it

– braiding it

– hammock

– sleep on it

– sit on it

– wash it

– iron it

What does your washing routine look like?

**Please remember to ALWAYS read your woven wraps specific washing instructions, and that these are just the washing tips & tricks of the PAXmommies. **
