“This should be my belly right now. I know five babies was not in our “plan” but now that #5 is no longer here, the pain of the loss runs deep. I never knew how much miscarriage can mess with your hormones, your mind, your heart. I should be prepping tiny diapers and finishing last minute quilts and blankies right now. Instead, I’m packing up the last of Baby #4’s diapers knowing there will never be another little baby here again. If anything, this experience has given me way more empathy to others going through the same thing. “It’s probably for the best.” And “be thankful for the kids you have” are not comforting … The grief is real, whether the baby was planned or not. The hormone fluctuation is real, and can make you feel off the wall. I know it is not my fault but the guilt of having four healthy, easy pregnancies and then a loss, is real. What went wrong with this one? I compare my loss to others, and think, “Ok, you need to suck it up – other people have been through WAY worse.” “At least it wasn’t _____” But, I need to allow myself sadness, time to grieve. My loss was real. It may be different, but it is still real.

The MySol is made from two layers of Girasol wrap fabric that nestles like a second skin around the baby being carried! Worn with either side facing out, the MySol is essentially reversible lengthening its life span and doubling its usability!

The MySol has been designed to grow with the child in order to ensure that babywearers get the most for their money and can use it for as long as possible: the width of the material between the legs may be easily adjusted – ideal for baby’s ergonomic M position with knees higher than bum!  The back of the MySol may be extended so that the carrier will still safely and comfortably fit even after your baby has grown into a toddler! **Girasol has emailed us with some interesting information regarding their design change! On the recommendation of babywearing consultants, the MySol will no longer feature that drawstring but instead offer a different way to cinch the front panel of the carrier. As one of the accessories included with the My Sol, the hip belt has velcro on each end so that it can be used to secure the width of the panel.

Carry your baby, not your car seat.

Like it, share it, spread the word!

We are not fueling the parent wars; merely shedding light on a common practice.

It’s *never* safe to put a car seat on top of a cart, whether or not it clicks in. The clicking can actually damage your seat, as it wasn’t meant to attach to anything other than its own base, and cause it to fail in an accident. This is specifically detailed in the car seat manuals. Additionally, the seat makes the cart incredibly top heavy and many babies have been injured or killed when carts have tipped over with their seats on top.

If you cannot babywear, try putting the bucket seat directly into the basket of the cart.

PAXmommy Shannon is 39 weeks pregnant and preparing for a home/waterbirth with her Baby #5!!!!! She is busy checking over her lists but keeps forgetting little things… what did YOUR “essentials” list look like???

It doesn’t seem like too long ago that PAXmommy Jillian was preparing for HER homebirth.

These last few weeks are the hardest and most exciting for a pregnant mama. The anticipation is just SO great. PAXmommy Shannon could go to bed tonight, and wake up in labour and have a baby the very next day, you just NEVER know.

What will baby look like? How will the birth be? How much will she weigh? Will she have hair? Blue eyes? Green eyes? Will the midwives make it in time? Will the other kids sleep through it, or want to attend??

We are SO excited to find out all of the little details, and are wishing PAXmommy Shannon the greatest birth ever.

1. First thing is first. Tell us your name, and how long you have been a PAXmommy for?

2. How many babies do you have?
I have 6 babies, ranging in age from 13 years old to 11 months

3. Have you worn them all?
Yes, I have actually. I wore my first 2 in a horribly uncomfortable snugli. I didn’t even remember until I saw a pic of myself. I really got into babywearing when #3 came along and we were officially outnumbered. I had to figure out a way to juggle all 3.

4. Who introduced you to babywearing?
I was bump buddies with a mom on babycenter. She sold me my first sling and added me to the babywearing community.

5. You have had two preemies, right? Can you explain to us how wearing a preemie can be different than wearing a full term baby?
Many people assume that preemies are just smaller newborns. There is a lot more to a preemie than that. They are amazing little babies that still have developing to do outside the womb. In the first weeks of life, up to their due dates they need an environment as close to the womb as possible. In the NICU, their incubator provides this environment, but once you are home, imho, a wrap or ring sling is the next closest thing. They are secure against their mother’s skin, listening to her heart beat, wrapped up tightly. I will always treasure those early wearing days. Even though I mourn losing the end of my pregnancy, I am so happy we had another way to create that bond.

6. Do you have any babywearing tips for preemie moms?
In my experience they have been extremely floppy and take longer than a full term baby to develop their core strength. This makes wearing in the first few months different than what I would recommend for full term babies. I personally do not recommend stretchy carriers. My son was 5lbs 2oz when I started wearing him and the stretchy wrap just did not support his back and spine in an optimal position.  A regular stretchy wrap would more suit a baby 8lbs or more, as the manufacturers recommend, but I did not test it out myself when he finally reached that weight 8 weeks later.
My absolute favorite carrier for a preemie is a wrap conversion ring sling. Easy to adjust and get baby in a good position without being overwhelming. 2nd favorite is a very thin woven wrap. Its best to save the meh dai’s and ssc for an older preemie once they can support their neck and core well. 7. One last question, what has surprised you most about babywearing this past year?
Everyone who knows me knows that I am a huge fan of woven wraps, they really are my go-to carrier for every situation. So when I got my first Tula, I expected it to become my husband’s carrier. Well to my surprise, I reach for the Tula every single day! It’s nothing like the other ssc (soft structured carriers) I’ve tried and I absolutely love it. If you would have told me 6 months ago that I’d reach for my Tula more than my Uppy, I would have laughed. Now I have to admit that I do! This wrapper has finally found the ssc love. <3

These past 4 months have been a blur of newborn yumminess, the joy of cloth diapering an infant, 24/7 babywearing, and creative genius!!!! My Baby #6 is my PAXbaby muse, and I am so grateful to him for inspiring me to be a better mom and a dedicated babywearer!  Together, Baby #6 and I have explored the deliciousness of stretchy wraps, the convenience of Soft Structured Carriers, the nuances of meh dais, and the new techniques of Ring Slings!  I am so lucky to have a baby who loves to be snuggled as much as I love to snuggle him!  Smoochies, Baby #6, and happy 4 months!!!!
