How true is this for our little world of babywearing????

When did you first fall down the rabbit hole?? The world of babywearing has changed so much in the last few years, it truly is amazing. To think under ten years ago it was actually hard to find a woven wrap locally, and now…. and now there are soooo many amazing beauties at the touch of our finger tips! While spending hours online researching these carriers, we find our friends, our support systems, our “families” and ourselves. The journey through motherhood can be lonely, and overwhelming but oh so rewarding when we finally find our “people”. We PAXmommies fell in love with babywearing years ago, and love where the journey has taken us: babywearing education, doula training, teaching, placenta encapsulation, home birthing, birth photography, natural parenting, Bradley Method training, and SO MANY AMAZING NEW FRIENDS!

(Post 1/2). Following her first two children Mel struggled with what she now identifies as postpartum anxiety. “I always thought that postpartum depression was about harming yourself or the baby. I didn’t realize that it could include anxiety and anger, and many other things. I felt so much rage at the silliest things, like my husband shhhh-ing the baby incorrectly and I didn’t realize that I wasn’t alone. In talking with friends later, I realized how common it was.” For Mel the anxiety was heightened with a baby that slept less than an hour at a time and a high energy toddler that needed constant attention. Sleep and patience seem to go hand in hand. “People would say, you should be happy, you have two beautiful kids. How do I love thee, Let Me Count the Ways…

A good wrap conversion ring sling (WCRS) is seriously worth it’s weight in gold… maybe even more. Once you find that sweet spot, you will wonder how you ever lived without one, or two… or three… in your stash.

Ring slings are also perfect for hot weather, as you only have one layer of fabric around you and baby, and fold up nice and small so you can easily throw one in your purse or diaper bag for emergency “uppies”!

Keep one in your car, too for throwing on for quick trips into the grocery store or school. Never be caught without a carrier again!

An added bonus, you can “dress up” any outfit with a beautiful ring sling! Same old tanktop and jeans, suddenly becomes a little more elegant with a long rainbow tail hanging to the ground!

One of the biggest reasons we love WCRSs is that they are so extremely versatile, and can be worn comfortably with any age (or sized) baby, toddler, or even tired preschooler!

To ensure a comfortable fit for everyone, it is important that you follow these steps:

– place baby high up over your shoulder, with rings behind you,

– pull the tail of the ring sling good and tight in one big fluid pull,

– place baby into the sling on your chest (right under your chin),

-make sure that your sling is spread evenly over your shoulder, and is not twisted in the back,

-rings should be flat against your chest, about where you would wear a corsage,

– tighten everything strand by strand to make sure all of the slack is out,

-to get a good seat, reach down and pull up the fabric between you and baby,

– make sure your baby is sitting knee to knee with knees higher than bum in “M” positioning,

– slowly adjust the rails little by little to make sure anything that has come loose, is tight again.

Getting a ring sling tightened properly, whether wearing rings on your front, or your back, takes practice.. . you may need to repeat a few of these steps, but please don’t give up and do not be afraid to ask for help! 200 women die in childbirth in Africa every single day. 200 is just a staggering, unbelievable number. What is more troubling is how easy and inexpensive it is to save these precious lives. $2.50 can purchase a vile of pitocin that can save a mother from postpartum hemorrhaging, a leading cause of maternal death. That’s right. Two dollars and fifty cents.

Imagine going in to the hospital to deliver your baby, and this is the scenario: You have to travel for days, mostly by foot. You are required to bring everything you will need with you, nothing is supplied, not even a bed and most certainly not linens or blankets or food or water. If you do not bring the supplies you need, you simply will not be provided them and if you don’t have money they will turn you away.

These are the obstacles many women in Africa face, in order to receive any kind of maternity care, but sadly, even after doing all they can to keep their babies safe, they are not always afforded the luxury of care, even in a life or death situation.

In a recent video I was sent, a mother was kicked out of the hospital and left on the side of the road bleeding to death because she did not have $50 to pay for the gas needed to transport her to the nearest hospital with up to date facilities. One of the midwives from Hearts4Africa stopped and saw this women dying and paid the $50 but it was too late, she had started bleeding several hours before and she and her baby passed away. When I say hospital, it is not at all what you might think. The hospitals that I have seen resemble a shabby garage, with dirty floors and women laying around, generally unattended fending for themselves, no sanitary supplies, no educated Doctors or Midwives. Almost more troubling than mothers and babies dying is the unimaginable fate of already living children whose mothers have just passed away. We have to work together to give these people a better life, better outcomes, and maternity care and support!

We are building a birth center in Uganda, to make this care more accessible. The land for the birth center has already been donated, the plans are drawn up and the head Obstetrician and midwife are already there helping women the best they can. Supplies are being stocked for the small onsite facility they have now and construction on the birth center will begin shortly.

Woven Wraps 101: SIZING

Woven Wraps 101: What do all those sizes mean?!

When you are brand new to babywearing and the world of woven wraps, there is just SOOOO much to learn! Weft… size… blend…wait, what the heck is a weft anyway? What’s the difference between a linen/bamboo blend and a hemp/cotton one? We will get to all of those, I promise, but really, the most important to learn, and yet, most confusing of all, is sizing!! What size do you start with? How do you know which will be best??

The sizing below is based off of a base size of 6!

We will cover base sizes in more detail at the end of this post, so sit tight! For now, know that if you wear larger than a size 12 clothing, or if you are particularly busty, you may need to go up a wrap size for most carries. If you wear a size 4 or smaller in clothing, you’ll likely prefer a size down in your wrap, or you may find yourself with overwhelmingly long tails! (Tails are the left over portion that hangs down when you have finished tying off a carry).

** Here’s our little safety spiel **:

As you experiment please take utmost precaution with your baby! Practice over a bed, have a spotter, and please do not attempt to back carry until you’ve mastered wrapping on your front AND baby can sit unassisted! Practice really does make perfect, and some of these carries do take awhile to master. If you do not feel comfortable attempting a new carry with your baby, we recommend trying with a weighted doll, or a stuffed animal until you get the movements down.

And now, on to the fun part!

Size 1: super shorty or rebozo length – 2.2m – this length is rarely produced, and as the name suggests, is REALLY short! A rebozo carry is really the only thing most people will be able to do with this length wrap. Most manufacturers do not offer a size 1.

Size 2: shorty – 2.6-2.8m – For an average sized wearer, this is where the fun starts! There are lots of carries that can be accomplished with a shorty!

Rebozo carry in a 3.2m Natibaby Classic Zebra in 30% hemp and 70% cotton

Size 3: long shorty – 3.1-3.2m – There’s a lot of versatility with a size 3, and this is the shortest length where most wearers can begin to pull off a two shoulder front carry. In addition to the size 2 carries, you will also be able to do:

Semi FWCC (Front Wrap Cross Carry)
DHR (Double Hammock Rebozo)
HCC (Hip Cross Carry)
Poppin’s Hip Carry
SCC (Short Cross Carry)
Hip Kangaroo Carry

Size 4: mid length 3.6-3.7m – mid length wraps are great for back and hip carries! In addition to these, you’ll be able to do the carries listed under size 3 and some of the size 2 carries.

5, 6, 7, and 8 are full length wraps, and many people will only use one of these sizes, called their “base size”. Which base size you use depends mostly on your clothing size. Most women who wear smaller than a size 6 clothing will use a size 5 (4.1-4.2m) as their base. The majority of wearers between a size 6 and size 12 clothing will use a size 6 (4.6-4.9m) wrap as their base, and most women who wear a size 14 or larger, and the majority of men, will use a size 7 (5.1-5.3m) as their base size. Large or very tall men, and women who wear a size 26 or larger clothing may find they prefer a size 8 (5.6-5.7m) wrap.

If you are especially busty, you may find that you need to go up a size, but as you become a more proficient wrapper, tighter passes and less slack will mean that you won’t need quite as much length.

Here’s where it gets a little tricky! Some wearers may find they like to size up or down for a particular carry, depending on their body type or the length of tail they prefer, but most wearers will be able to do these carries with their base size, and some of the size 4 carries, as well! (What size you prefer for these will come with practice, I promise!!)

There is just SO much versatility with babywearing in a woven wrap, it can seem overwhelming at first… almost like learning a new language. So many terms, so many abbreviations, so many videos and tutorials. Not every carry will be your favorite, but there are sure to be at least a few that you fall in LOVE with. The carries we’ve listed are really just scratching the surface, there are many, many more!! By changing the way you tie off a carry, you can use a longer or shorter wrap, make a carry more supportive or even stop your toddler from popping their seat! Perhaps, now you can see why some people may have a veritable collection of woven wraps! There are SO many different patterns, blends, styles, and SIZES, who could choose just one?!

The key to becoming an awesome wrapper is to learn the basics, and get them down pat before moving on to anything more advanced. Ask your babywearing group leaders for assistance, participate in babywearing challenges, watch videos from reputable sources, and always, always, always put safety first.
