This September PAXbaby is pleased to host the lovely Joanna McNeilly from the Center for Babywearing Studies; join us here! Once again, Joanna will be teaching the Foundations course. You can read all of the nitty gritty details directly on the CBWS website, but here is an excerpt:

During the course you will:

Learn how to teach others to wear baby carriers: Pouches and ring slings, woven and stretchy wraps, meh dais and SSCs (soft structured carriers), plus a few knots.
Examine the physiological and the psychological aspects of infant carrying.
Identify how to assist someone in discovering what makes a good carry/carrier for themselves.
Discover and recognize the importance of a systematic approach.
Understand our core principles which will guide you as you meet each new parent.
Design your own concept for an individual consultation.
Explore sensitive listening and it’s importance in successful consultations.
Delve into incident data reports from the CPSC (reports of injury in baby carriers/while babywearing) to better understand what concerns exist with regard to babywearing.

200 women die in childbirth in Africa every single day. 200 is just a staggering, unbelievable number. What is more troubling is how easy and inexpensive it is to save these precious lives. $2.50 can purchase a vile of pitocin that can save a mother from postpartum hemorrhaging, a leading cause of maternal death. That’s right. Two dollars and fifty cents.

Imagine going in to the hospital to deliver your baby, and this is the scenario: You have to travel for days, mostly by foot. You are required to bring everything you will need with you, nothing is supplied, not even a bed and most certainly not linens or blankets or food or water. If you do not bring the supplies you need, you simply will not be provided them and if you don’t have money they will turn you away.

These are the obstacles many women in Africa face, in order to receive any kind of maternity care, but sadly, even after doing all they can to keep their babies safe, they are not always afforded the luxury of care, even in a life or death situation.

In a recent video I was sent, a mother was kicked out of the hospital and left on the side of the road bleeding to death because she did not have $50 to pay for the gas needed to transport her to the nearest hospital with up to date facilities. One of the midwives from Hearts4Africa stopped and saw this women dying and paid the $50 but it was too late, she had started bleeding several hours before and she and her baby passed away. When I say hospital, it is not at all what you might think. The hospitals that I have seen resemble a shabby garage, with dirty floors and women laying around, generally unattended fending for themselves, no sanitary supplies, no educated Doctors or Midwives. Almost more troubling than mothers and babies dying is the unimaginable fate of already living children whose mothers have just passed away. We have to work together to give these people a better life, better outcomes, and maternity care and support!

We are building a birth center in Uganda, to make this care more accessible. The land for the birth center has already been donated, the plans are drawn up and the head Obstetrician and midwife are already there helping women the best they can. Supplies are being stocked for the small onsite facility they have now and construction on the birth center will begin shortly.

Baby #7 aka #babycate is due November 5, but Jillian has never hit a due date yet!!!

PS – This will be Jillian’s 6th natural birth : 5th homebirth, and 4th waterbirth

Did your friends or family do anything special for you when you were getting close to THAT time?

Isn’t it just so amazing being pregnant so late in the game? The anticipation, the excitement. Thinking that any time could be THE time. You could go to bed one night, and have a baby the next. It is just SO amazing.

What were a few hints your body gave you that it realllllly was THE time.

Spreading the Babywearing Love

So you want to share the babywearing love!?!?!

Once you’ve been babywearing forever and ever, you will probably feel the need to share your knowledge! What mom wouldn’t want to know how to care for her baby at the same time as getting everything done!?

There are many local ways you can help your community!

Step #1 – Write a “resume” style letter introducing yourself and include photos of yourself wearing babies in varying ages and an assortment of carriers.
Step #2 – Drop off your introduction letter with your local midwives, pediatricians, holistic doctors, baby yoga instructors, etc…
Step #3 – Encourage them to call you if they would like you to help promote the natural bonding between baby and babywearer to their clients!
Step #4 – Have a varied stash of carriers that you can get your hands on quickly if you get called on at the last second!
Step #5 – Get out there and show these babies what they’ve been missing!
