I am lucky enough to have my own newborn babywearing model again!  No more borrowing my neighbors’ babies and no more lusting after everyone else’s squish!  #6 is the perfect model because he was “born to babywear!” I think I need a bumper sticker that says that, hahaaa!  #6 has great head control which is important when babywearing a newborn.  If your infant is still floppy, please take extra care when manipulating their body into your carrier of choice!  #6 also prefers to be in the upright, or in babywearing speak “tummy to tummy,” position rather than the cradle hold which is being phased out due to safety issues!  Also, my new little guy loves to have his legs in the froggy position – meaning crossed legged – and he likes to have his legs under him which gives him more height in the carrier, however he is tall, which means we’ll need to transition to having his legs more in the “Buddha position” with his legs crossed in front of him.  At around 3-4 months when you notice that you are holding him naturally on your hip with baby’s legs straddling your body, you’ll know that it’s time to pull first 1 leg out of the carrier, and once baby is used to that, pull the other leg out too so baby is in the standard M position with knees higher than the bottom!

While wearing the Beco Butterfly II, the most important thing to remember is that this Soft Structured Carrier was designed for speed!  You can get the carrier on in no time, and the actual loading of your baby into the carrier should be a matter of seconds!  Here are the steps for a successful front carry in the BBII with a newborn:

Fasten chest clip and push as low on the shoulder straps as possible – this will help to spread baby’s weight over your entire body and not leave your shoulders with the entire burden!

Pop the Beco over your head and settle the waistband low and snug on your hips. If your little one is especially tiny, move the waistband up to your natural waist.  If your pants tend to push down while you are babywearing, use the waistband as a “belt” to keep your trousers up!

Open both the safety buckles on the Y panel and make sure that those buckles have been tightened as far as they can.  Most BBIIs come from Beco headquarters ready to carry a toddler not an infant.  Open the infant insert buckles as well.  Most babies, once froggied, will have enough height that the infant insert needs to be at the lowest level but do raise it up if necessary!  At this point, the BBII will be ready for baby with 2 layers against your chest – Y panel as well as infant insert.

Tuck baby against your chest, and settle him into the pocket created by the infant insert and the front panel.  Give a little jump to make sure baby’s bum and froggy legs are firmly seated, and buckle the infant insert clips, then the safety buckles.  Ensure baby’s safety by being able to kiss baby’s head, keeping baby’s airway passages clear (don’t wear a fluffy shirt), and don’t let baby’s head slouch so that their chin is touching their chest and causing wheezing sounds!
